Q. What is Coaching ?
Coaching has been defined in many ways. Coaching is a process:
- To facilitate a person change in the way they wish and facilitating them go in the direction they want to go.
- Coaching supports a person at every level in becoming who they want to be.
- Coaching builds awareness empowers choice and leads to change.
It unlocks a person’s potential to maximise their performance. Coaching helps them to learn rather than teaching them.
Coaching has traditionally been associated with sports. Every top athlete has a coach. In the last few years, coaching has become applicable in every area, in business and in every aspect of life as well as sport.
Now, it is quite normal for someone to see a coach to help them achieve their goals in their life and work.
Coaching is a partnership between coach and client.
The coach helps the client to achieve their personal best and to produce the results they want in their personal and professional lives. Coaching ensures the client can give their best, learn and develop in the way they wish.
The coach need not be an expert in their clients’ field of work.
Q. What is the difference between Coaching, Counselling, Mentoring, Consultancy, Teaching & Training
Mentoring
Mentoring is when a senior colleague, seen as more knowledgeable and worldly wise gives advice and provides a role model. Mentoring involves wide ranging discussions that may not be limited to the work context. A mentor is a sponsor with great professional experience in their client’s field of work. Both mentoring and coaching are concerned mainly with achievements in the present and the future.
Counselling/Therapy
Therapy is working with the client who seeks relief from psychological or physical symptoms. The client wants emotional healing and relief from mental pain. Therapy deals with the client’s mental health. Coaching deals with the client’s mental growth. The client’s motive for entering therapy or counselling is usually to get away from pain or discomfort, rather than moving towards desired goals. Coaching is not remedial, it is generative. Both therapy and counselling are more likely to involve understanding and working with past experience than coaching.
Training
Training is the process of getting knowledge skills or abilities by study, experience or teaching. The trainer by definition is the expert, and the training course is likely to be targeted on specific skills for immediate results. Training is also likely to be one to many rather than one to one.
Consultancy
A consultant provides expertise and solves business problems, or develops a business as a whole. A consultant deals with the overall organization or specific parts of it and not individuals within it. Consultants only indirectly affect individuals.
Teaching
Teaching passes knowledge from teacher to student. The teacher knows something the student does not. The opposite is true in coaching. The client is the expert and the client has the answers, not the coach.
Q. What is a discovery Call
A discovery call is a 15-20 min chat with a coach to find out more information about the coach and coaching sessions. You may wish to ask the coach what areas they work with, qualifications and training the coach has received, fees, duration of sessions and anything else you would like to ask the coach. Discovery call can be delivered via telephone, face to face or online. Discovery calls are free of charge and no commitment is required.
Q. What does Coaching sessions involve

During the sessions your coach will facilitate you in exploring your goals, identify and assist in removing blocks to achieving goals and through the process of change. Coaches do this by using open ended questioning skills and various coaching techniques to challenge unhelpful thinking and beliefs that my be blocking you from achieving your goal
Q How many sessions do I need
There is no minimum amount of sessions. Number of sessions is client lead. You can attend as many sessions as you wish
Q What areas of coaching do I work with
Areas Joanna works with are
Mindset Coaching
A mindset coach works with his or her clients to uncover the beliefs, blocks, behaviours, habits and patterns of thinking that prevent them from living the life or creating the business they desire.
Taking these insights into what makes their client tick, the Mindset Coach uses a range of reprogramming techniques to banish those blocks and replace them with ones that serve the client.
By working with mindset in this way, the coach paves the way for faster results, greater transformation and lasting success.
Mindset Coaches are typically skilled in using in a range of neuroscience-based and therapeutic techniques including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
The common link between all mindset coaching clients is that there is a misalignment between what they want at the conscious level and the unconscious patterns, beliefs, behaviours, habits and programs that are running in the background.
What a mindset coach does is to unlock these unconscious (and sometimes conscious) patterns and then work with their client to shift and remove them. These are then replaced with new ones that help the client to move forwards and achieve his or her goals more quickly and more easily than before.
Career Change Coaching
Personal Development Coaching
Personal development, or self-improvement/development, is a way of assessing your goals and making a conscious effort to better yourself. This is a lifelong process that is entirely personal and unique to you. You may consider your abilities, skills, qualities, values, and aims in life and try to act on these to reach your full potential. You might ask yourself “what do I want to achieve in life?” This could be anything from focusing on your employability to increasing self-confidence or living every day to its fullest.
Personal development focuses on increasing your self-awareness, looking at life goals, personal challenges and long-standing aspirations. Personal development coaching aims to evaluate these life changes, whilst assessing your strengths and weaknesses to improve certain areas of your life.
